Gifts of Stock, Donor Advised Funds & IRAs
There’s more than one way to walk alongside your neighbors in northeast Berks County. Giving appreciated stock, recommending a grand from your donor advised fund, or making a gift from your IRA can stretch your generosity further — and may bring you meaningful tax benefits, too.
Appreciated Stock
Give shares you’ve held more than a year. You may deduct their full market value and avoid capital gains tax.
Donor Advised Fund
Already set aside charitable dollars? Recommend a grant to Friend, Inc. from your fund in just a few minutes.
IRA Charitable Rollover
Age 70½ or older? Give directly from your IRA tax-free – and it can count toward your required minimum distribution.
Give Appreciated Stock
Stocks, bonds and mutual funds that have grown in value can do even more good when given directly to Friend, Inc. rather than sold first. Because the shares come to us before they’re sold, more of their value reaches the pantry shelves and the families who count on us.
Why give stock?
- If you itemize, you may deduct the full fair market value of shares held more than one year, measured on the date of transfer.
- You pay no capital gains tax on the appreciation.
- Own shares that have lost value? Consider selling them yourself, claiming the loss, and donating the proceeds – your tax advisor can help you decide.
How to give stock
- Share the transfer details at right with your broker or financial advisor and ask them to transfer the shares to Friend, Inc.
- Let us know your gift is on its way. Brokerages often send shares without the donor’s name, so we need to hear from you to thank you properly and send your tax receipt. Please share your name, the stock name and ticker symbol, the number of shares, and the date of transfer.
- Friend, Inc. will sell the shares and put the proceeds to work right here in our community.
Give Through a Donor Advised Fund
A donor advised fund (DAF) is a charitable giving account held at a sponsoring organization – a community foundation, or a financial firm such as Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable or Vanguard Charitable. You contribute cash, stock or other assets, receive a tax deduction in the year you contribute, and then recommend grants to the charities you care about over time.
Because you’ve already received your deduction, your DAF is often the simplest way to support Friend, Inc. – especially at year end.
How to recommend a grant
- Log in to your DAF account, visit every.org/friend-inc, or call your fund administrator.
- Search for Friend, Inc. Community Services by name or by our EIN, 23-1924643.
- Enter your grant amount. If you’d like your gift to support a specific purpose – such as A Home for Hope: Here to Stay, our capital campaign – note it in the designation field.
- Let us know about your grant. Sponsors don’t always share donor names with us, and we want to be sure to thank you.

Give From Your IRA
Retirement doesn’t have to mean giving less. If you’re 70½ or older, an IRA Charitable Rollover – also called a Qualified Charitable Distribution, or QCD – lets you give directly from your traditional IRA to Friend, Inc. without paying income tax on the distribution.
- Give up to $111,000 in 2026 per person, tax-free, if you are 70½ or older.
- Satisfy your RMD. If you are 73 or older, your gift can count toward your required minimum distribution.
- Lower your taxable income – the gift is excluded from your income, which helps whether or not you itemize.
• The gift must go directly from your IRA administrator to Friend, Inc. If the funds are paid to you first, they won’t qualify.
How to make an IRA gift
- Contact your IRA administrator and request a Qualified Charitable Distribution to Friend, Inc. Community Services (EIN 23-1924643).
- Ask that the check be made payable to Friend, Inc. Community Services and mailed to the address at right.
- Let us know it’s coming. IRA checks often arrive without the donor’s name, so please share your name, your IRA administrator, and the amount.
